      We shudder to think of female circumcision (aka female genital mutilation), but in our culture don't hesitate when it comes to boys.  In almost 30 countries, where female circumcision is the norm, they feel it is necessary. [1]  If your first reaction to female circumcision is horror, you should ask yourself why you don't feel the same way when it is done to a boy.  Here is some fodder for thought: 2/3 of males worldwide are not circumcised, making those who circumcise the minority.

 This is an excellent video about circumcision.  It can be hard to hear that your culture prescribes to something other cultures view as abhorrent, like foot binding, female genital mutilation, force-feeding [4], and child brides.  I encourage you to watch with an open mind.

I strongly believe that if a problem arises at some point with a child or adult's genitals, male or female, that is when action should be taken, not before.  Even though I am very passionate about this, I know those who choose to circumcise love their children and I do not want to vilify anyone, but I hope parents will question their cultural bias before making such an important decision.
